The Community Service Program (KKN) Team 2 from Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) has successfully implemented a flagship project involving ammoniated feed training in Jatisari Village, Sambi Subdistrict, Boyolali Regency. This program aims to address the recurring issue of cattle feed shortages during the dry season, when the availability of grass significantly decreases, while the village experiences a surplus of straw during harvest time.

The training was led by Restu Wijaya, a student from UNDIP’s Bachelor of Animal Science program, who has extensive knowledge of livestock feed technology. The Jatisari Village Farmers’ Group Association (Gapoktan) was the primary target of this training, as they are the most affected by the fluctuations in livestock feed availability.

Ammoniated Straw as a Feed Solution During the Dry Season

Ammoniated Straw is an effective solution for addressing livestock feed shortages, particularly during the dry season. Using ammoniation technology, the surplus straw available during harvest can be preserved and utilized as high-quality livestock feed. During the training, Restu Wijaya provided a step-by-step guide to the Gapoktan members on how to produce Ammoniated straw , from the fermentation process to proper storage techniques.

Restu also highlighted the benefits of using ammoniated straw, including its ability to retain nutrients over an extended period and enhance the efficient use of local resources that were previously underutilized.

Positive Response from Farmers

The training was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from the Gapoktan members and the Jatisari Village community. They recognized that straw ammoniation technology is highly practical and can provide a long-term solution to the issue of livestock feed shortages, especially during critical seasons like the dry season.

One of the Gapoktan members expressed that the training was highly beneficial to them. “We often struggle to find feed for our cattle during the dry season. With this training, we now know that the surplus straw from the harvest can be processed into long-lasting and nutritious feed,” he said.

The head of Jatisari Village also expressed his appreciation for the UNDIP KKN program, hoping that the technology taught can be widely adopted by the village’s farmers.

This KKN program not only introduced new technology to the community but also provided a tangible solution to the challenges faced by the farmers in Jatisari Village. With the success of the ammoniated straw training, it is hoped that Jatisari Village can become more self-sufficient in managing local resources and improving the welfare of its livestock farmers.
