Mineral blocks are mineral-rich feed supplements designed to meet the mineral needs of ruminants such as cows, goats, and sheep, commonly found in rural areas. Minerals are essential for bone formation during gestation and the growth of bones, teeth, and muscle tissue. They are also crucial as enzyme components and base materials for metabolic processes. In addition, mineral deficiency causes many livestock to collapse and become paralyzed. One noticeable sign of this deficiency is when animals often lick the walls of their cages. Therefore, producing mineral blocks can effectively address the mineral needs of livestock.

Rizqi Ibnu Awwalin, a member of the 2nd Team of Community Development (KKN) at Universitas Diponegoro, from the Bachelor of Animal Science Program, Faculty of Animal and Agricultural Sciences, Universitas Diponegoro, commanded a training session on making feed supplements titled Mineral Block (MB) Licking Candy to Fulfill Livestock Mineral Needs”. This training targeted local farmers in Wiro Village, Bayat District, Klaten Regency. It began with the Village Head’s opening remarks, followed by a presentation from the KKN team on the importance of minerals for livestock and the consequences of mineral deficiencies. The process of producing mineral blocks was then continued under the guidance of KKN students.  The mineral blocks were made from low-cost and easily accessible materials, including coarse salt, ultra-minerals, white cement, and water.

The farmers were enthusiastic about the training, as evidenced by their total attendance and active participation in the mineral block-making process. In his opening remarks, Mr. Sinto, S.E., the Village Head of Wiro, expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the Universitas Diponegoro KKN students for organizing the training. He also hoped that the initiative would help meet the mineral needs of livestock in Wiro Village, leading to increased productivity.
