On Saturday, 28 October 2023, the Bachelor Animal Science Student Association held training on making starter feed for pre-weaning calves (Calf Starter) by inviting Prof.Dr.Ir. Sri Mukodiningsih, M.S. as a speaker at this activity with the theme “Make a Calf Starter to Promote Calf Performance”. This activity is specifically for Bachelor of Animal Science students class of 2022 and 2023 as participants.
The training began with an opening from the Supervisor of the Bachelor Animal Science Student Association, Asep Setiaji, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D. and then continued with providing material regarding Starter Feed as a Milk Substitute to Support Pre-Weaning Calf Performance by Prof. Dr. Ir. After obtaining the materials, participants were mobilized to the Mini Feed Mill to practice making pre-weaning calf feed in pellet form which was coordinated by assistants from the Feed Technology Laboratory, namely Atik Santika and Elza Tria Lutvia. Pre-weaning calf feed or calf starter is usually prepared with the following contents: Crude Protein (PK) 20%, Total Digestible Nutrient (TDN) 80%, fat 3%, Calcium (Ca) 0.6% and Phosphorus (P) 0.4 %. The feed ingredients used in making calf starter include ground corn, fine bran, fish meal, soybean meal, vitamins, minerals and molasses.
The Interest and Talent Training Committee of the Undergraduate Animal Husbandry Student Association hopes that with this activity the participants can begin to develop their interest and potential in the field of ruminant farming, especially in large ruminants including dairy or beef cattle. Apart from that, with training activities, it is hoped that participants will gain relationships and experience which will of course be sustainable with their study activities.
