Livestock Slaughter Management is one of the compulsory subjects in the Bachelor Animal Science curriculum at the Faculty of Animal and Agricultural Sciences, Diponegoro University. This course is under the auspices of the Beef and Dairy Production Laboratory. In this course, in addition to learning activities in class, field practice is also carried out to improve students’ knowledge and skills in the process of slaughtering livestock. The Livestock Slaughter Management practicum consists of 3 events, namely practitioner lecture, practice in slaughterhouses, and slaughter of small ruminants (goats/sheep) on campus.

On Sunday 26 February 2023, to be precise in the hall of the Faculty of Animal and Agricultural Sciences, a practitioner lecture was held with the theme ” Management of Slaughterhouse and Implementation of Halal Assurance” with Mrs. Ika Nurawati, DVM. (Head of RPH & BHP Unit, PT. Bhumi Pandanaran Sejahtera Semarang City) and Mr. Muhammad Shofa M. (Deputy Director of LPPOM MUI Central Java) as practitioners. The event was opened by Ir. Rudy Hartanto, Ph.D., IPM. (Head of the Animal Science Study Program) and attended by Edi Prayitno, S.Pt., M.Si. (Coordinator of the Beef and Dairy Production Laboratory), and lecturer in the Livestock Slaughtering Management course. The practitioner lecture was hosted by Dr. Ari Prima, and took place in an orderly and interesting manner from start to finish. Even though it was held on Sunday, this did not reduce the enthusiasm of students to follow and gain knowledge from the presenters. A total of 250 students attended the practitioner lecture. All students were enthusiastic and interested in the material presented, so that a pleasant discussion atmosphere was formed between the students and the speakers. Students are very interested in the slaughter procedures in order to obtain halal products, the requirements to obtain a Veterinary Control Number (VCN) and the use of the stunning method in the livestock slaughtering process.

Sylvia Maharani, a class of 2020 student who took part in the practitioner lecture said that “the lecture material is generally very interesting, adds insight into the process of slaughtering halal livestock, the discussion is very exciting and makes me impatient to immediately practice slaughtering livestock in slaughterhouses and in the laboratory, and hopefully this lecture can be continued in the future because the material is very useful and interesting.” Another testimony was delivered by Deby Amadius Wijayanti who said that “I want to thank you for holding the practitioner lecture yesterday, because in my opinion this activity is very important to do and can add to our knowledge regarding livestock slaughter. Based on the explanation from Mrs. Ika, we can know the good and correct terms and conditions for abattoirs, the concept of animal welfare, and so on. Apart from that, after receiving material explanation from Mr. Shofa, I came to know the concept of how to slaughter livestock in a lawful and correct manner, the characteristics of livestock being slaughtered are really dead or not”.

Seeing the enthusiasm of the students and the importance of this practitioner lecture, the Animal Science Study Program is committed to continuing to hold lectures on the slaughtering process for Bachelor of Animal Science students taking the Livestock Slaughter Management course in the future.
